Microsoft has officially launched “Xbox Mode” for Windows 11, introducing a new console-inspired gaming experience designed to make PC gaming feel more like using an Xbox console. The feature is now rolling out in select regions for desktops, laptops, tablets, and handheld gaming PCs.

Xbox Mode transforms the Windows 11 gaming experience into a controller-friendly interface that prioritizes games, recently played titles, and quick access to gaming libraries. The update also reduces background system activity to improve performance and lower power consumption, especially on handheld devices.

Microsoft says the new mode was designed for players who want a streamlined gaming-focused experience without the distractions of the traditional Windows desktop. The feature supports aggregated game libraries, meaning users can access titles from multiple launchers such as Steam, Battle.net, Epic Games Store, and Xbox Game Pass directly from one interface.

The launch is also closely tied to Microsoft’s growing handheld gaming strategy. Xbox Mode first appeared as an exclusive feature on the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally before expanding to other Windows 11 devices. Reports suggest the mode can save up to 2GB of RAM and significantly reduce idle power usage, helping handheld systems deliver longer battery life and smoother gameplay.

Microsoft has also added several controller-focused improvements to Windows 11, including gamepad navigation on the lock screen, an upgraded task switcher, and expanded gaming settings directly inside the Xbox Game Bar.

Early community reaction has been mostly positive, with many gamers comparing Xbox Mode to Valve’s SteamOS experience on the Steam Deck. Some users on Reddit praised the cleaner interface and reduced system overhead, while others are waiting to see how stable the feature becomes after wider rollout.

The rollout is currently happening gradually through Windows 11 updates, with Microsoft expected to expand availability worldwide over the coming months.
